Commenting on the ratification of the CETA free trade agreement by the German Federal Parliament, Ulrich Ackermann, head of the foreign trade department at VDMA, saya:
Frankfurt, 1/12/2022 – “Finally, the German Bundestag has also ratified CETA. The Federal Constitutional Court had already ruled at the beginnig of the year, that Germany may continue to participate in the free trade agreement between the EU and Canada. The fact that the parliament nevertheless hesitated so long with its ratification is all the more incomprehensible given that the German government sees itself in the role of European champion against the growing global protectionism from which the German export industry is increasingly suffering.
Germany should now press for the agreements with Mercosur, Mexico and Chile to be signed quickly and then ratified.
Ulrich Ackermann, Head of VDMA Foreign Trade
Germany should now press for the agreements with Mercosur, Mexico and Chile to be signed and then ratified quickly as well. Because European trade policy must remain credible. No one will negotiate a free trade agreement with the EU in the future if its implementation is not ensured.
