Sant’Agata Bolognese, 19 June 2025 – The Lamborghini SC63 returns to action this weekend for the third round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship round of the season, at the iconic and picturesque Watkins Glen International for the Sahlen’s 6 Hours of the Glen.

Due to a clash with the Nürburgring 24 Hours where he will be racing a Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 as part of the Abt Sportsline team, Mirko Bortolotti will not be present at Watkins Glen, with regular season team-mates and fellow Lamborghini Factory Drivers Romain Grosjean and Daniil Kvyat instead combining forces in the #63 LMDh.

There is also a change in the #9 Pfaff Motorsports GTD Pro line-up, with Lamborghini Factory Driver Sandy Mitchell stepping up to race alongside Andrea Caldarelli, with the team’s full-season driver Marco Mapelli also on duty at the Nürburgring.

For the SC63, it has been a challenging campaign so far in the GTP class, with two successive retirements at Daytona and Sebring. The learning experience is set to continue at Watkins Glen, but the team will be buoyed by its performance at the same race last year where, until a mechanical issue struck, the car had been running strongly inside the top five after a solid qualifying.

In GTD Pro, the momentum is there with Pfaff Motorsports who secured a well-deserved maiden podium finish with Lamborghini at the most recent round on the streets of Detroit courtesy of Caldarelli and Mapelli. The Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 has historically performed well at the upstate New York track, having been in the hunt for GTD and GTD Pro victory last year before an unfortunate incident with a backmarker brought a premature end to the race.

Former British GT champion Mitchell arrives at the team off the back of a packed GT3 campaign in Europe, where he currently competes in the Pro class of the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup (with VSR) and Sprint Cup (with Barwell Motorsport). The 25-year-old driver from Scotland has prior experience in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, having raced at both Road America and Daytona last year. Mitchell also has experience of the Watkins Glen track too via the one-make Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America series in 2019.

The GTD line-ups remain unchanged since the start of the season in the Michelin Endurance Cup, with Lamborghini Young Professional Driver Danny Formal joined again by Trent Hindman and Graham Doyle in the #45 Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2. The trio were cruelly denied a chance to win the Daytona 24 Hours in class back in January and will be aiming to bounce back after a difficult Sebring 12 Hours in March. Meanwhile, Forte Racing return to the scene of one of their finest moments in IMSA competition, when Loris Spinelli claimed both class and overall pole position in 2023. Full season drivers Mario Farnbacher and Misha Goikhberg are once more accompanied by Parker Kligerman.

The weekend at a glance

Summer races at the 5.552km, 11-turn Watkins Glen International circuit often bring high ambient temperatures and humidity, making life extremely difficult for both cars and drivers alike. Tyre conservation will therefore be of paramount concern across the GTP and GTD categories. Action kicks off on Friday afternoon with the first of two practice sessions before qualifying takes place on Saturday. Much like the 2024 edition, rain showers are also not uncommon in this part of the United States, meaning strong qualifying performances and astute tyre strategy calls may play a crucial role.
