  • LA28 has launched its official volunteer programme, inviting people to get involved in community projects ahead of the Games.
  • The programme is starting immediately, with the LA28 Volunteer Crew to support meaningful causes across the region, including wildfire recovery and hunger relief.
  • Registration for Games-time volunteer roles is now open on a dedicated platform, with more details to follow in 2026.

LA28’s volunteer programme offers opportunities for participation as early as this year, with community-focused events taking place throughout the Los Angeles region in the years leading up to the Games. Registration is now open on LA28’s dedicated platform, with details on Games-time volunteer roles to be shared in 2026 as the programme evolves.

Why launch the volunteer programme now?

Launching the programme more than two years before the Games allows LA28 to provide a variety of opportunities for residents to serve their city, strengthen civic engagement and create lasting community impact through the power of sport.

“We are not waiting until 2028 to tap into Los Angeles’ resilience, generosity and grit,” explained LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover.

This unique initiative channels the spirit of volunteerism long before the Opening Ceremony, and we have the chance to create a model for future host cities, as well as a legacy for Los Angeles and the Games. Our hope is that this programme can be a catalyst for Angelenos to give back to the city they love, unite across communities and help build a stronger city together.

Volunteers are an essential aspect of every Olympic Games, fulfilling a range of important roles and shaping memorable experiences for athletes, visitors and local residents alike.

What impact will LA28’s volunteer programme have on local communities?

Since LA was awarded the Games in 2017, LA28 employees have participated in more than 100 community events throughout Southern California, and last month staged pilot events with local organisations Shine LA and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank to prepare to scale up volunteering efforts.

Angelenos can join the LA28 Volunteer Crew straight away and take part in projects across the region. Working with local partners, LA28 will support meaningful causes such as wildfire recovery, hunger relief, youth sport and community development.

“The Games would not be possible without the volunteers, who are key in shaping the experience of fans and athletes alike,” said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. “The volunteer programme will be another step toward building greater community engagement around the Games. Through programmes like this and our monthly Shine LA activations, we are bringing this city together in the spirit of the 2028 Games and building a foundation for future civic engagement.”

The volunteer programme builds on existing community and legacy initiatives such as the city’s PlayLA programme, which has received USD 160 million in funding from LA28 and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). PlayLA has already provided low-cost youth and adaptive sports opportunities to more than a million young people across Los Angeles.

After signing up on the dedicated platform, registered volunteers will receive invitations to participate in specific events based on their interests and location.

The LA28 Olympic Games will take place from 14 to 30 July 2028, followed by the Paralympic Games from 15 to 27 August.
