Hyundai Motor Group and Michelin Partner to Accelerate NextGeneration Tire Technologies for Future Mobility

  • Joint R&D to deliver extreme-low rolling resistance and high-performance tires using advanced solutions
  • Collaboration to expand virtual development capabilities and Embedded Tire Digital Twin technologies  
  • Builds on previous achievements to strengthen technological leadership

Hyundai Motor Group has signed a third memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Michelin to accelerate tire technology innovations that will lead the future mobility market. This agreement continues the partnership established through MOUs signed in 2017 and 2022.

Under the new three-year partnership, the two companies will collaborate on:

  • Joint R&D of extreme-low rolling resistance tires to improve fuel efficiency and high-performance tires to enhance handling safety
  • Enhancing tire performance for premium EVs, which demand cutting-edge tire technology for high performance, safety, and extended range
  • Establishing a virtual tire development system for off-road applications
  • Advancing SmartGrip technology to enhance braking performance and efficiency

The collaboration aims to address the evolving demands of electric and autonomous vehicles, including high load capacity, driving performance, and environmental sustainability.

“Through the third phase of technological collaboration with Michelin, we expect to achieve tire technology innovations that will lead the future mobility market,” said Yongsuk Shin, Vice President and Head of Genesis Engineering Design Center at Hyundai Motor Group, “By leveraging the specialized capabilities of both companies in mobility and tire technologies, we will utilize advanced solutions.”

The MOU signed in 2017 contributed to the development of tire technologies for the Hyundai IONIQ 5, while the 2022 agreement achieved significant progress in tire wear prediction and braking performance enhancement.

Building on these achievements, Hyundai Motor Group and Michelin aim to accelerate technological innovation and deliver breakthrough tire technologies for future mobility.
